Medication Management: Options to Help Manage Costs
Prescription costs stop far too many people from taking their medications as directed—and that directly impacts health outcomes. The good news? You have more options than you think.
This guide summarizes several well-established tools and programs that may lower your out-of-pocket costs.

- Ability to upload, fax, or email your prescription
You will pay out-of-pocket and medications ship directly to you.

Walmart’s long-standing low-cost generic program includes nearly 100 commonly prescribed medications for conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.
What to know:
- Some meds are $4, others $10 or $40
- Options available in 30- or 90-day supplies
- Many 90-day fills cost $10
- No membership, no insurance required
- Insurance plans may impact your final cost
For many, this is the cheapest option for stable, long-term medications.
GoodRx
GoodRx lets you compare prices across multiple pharmacies—differences of $20, $50, even $100+ are not unusual.
How it helps:
- Shows pharmacy-specific pricing
- Offers printable coupons or app-based discounts
- Provides a Prescription Savings Card for the whole family
GoodRx is not insurance and doesn’t count toward your deductible, but it often lowers costs dramatically.
SingleCare
Another discount tool that works similarly to GoodRx.
What you get:
- Pharmacy price comparisons
- Printable or mobile coupons
- No membership needed
- Discounts accepted at major pharmacy chains
Consumers often report excellent pricing for many generics.
Manufacturer Coupons & Patient Assistance Programs
Brand-name drugs are increasingly expensive. Many pharmaceutical companies offer:
- Copay cards for commercially insured patients
- Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs) for qualifying low-income individuals
- Drug-specific discount programs
Important considerations:
- Not available for Medicare, Medicaid, or government-insured patients
- Income or insurance restrictions may apply
- Most programs require annual renewal
Ask your pharmacist or visit the manufacturer’s website to see if assistance is available for your medication.
Talk to Your Doctor: Is There a Cheaper Alternative?
This is one of the MOST underused strategies.
Ask your prescriber:
- Is there a generic?
- Is there a therapeutic equivalent?
- Is there an older medication that works just as well at a lower cost?
- Can I get a 90-day supply to reduce copays?
Sometimes a small medication change can save hundreds of dollars a year with no impact on effectiveness. Do not be shy about having this discussion with your provider. It is your healthcare, get what will work for you.
Medication Savings Checklist
Use this before filling any prescription:
Ask Your Doctor or Pharmacist
- Is there a generic version?
- Is there a cheaper alternative that treats the same condition?
- Can I switch to a 90-day supply?

- GoodRx — goodrx.com
- SingleCare — singlecare.com
- Canada Pharmacy — canadapharmacy.com
- Call several local pharmacies—prices vary more than you think

With a little research and the right questions, you can significantly reduce your medication costs—and stay on track with your treatment plan.
